Losing weight and keeping it off is rarely about willpower alone. Weight is affected by your health history, your medications, your sleep, your thyroid and hormones, and what is realistic in your daily life. The weight loss program at Kilcoy Medical Centre starts with a proper look at all of that, with a GP who knows your history, rather than a one-size-fits-all plan.

Why Start With Your GP

Your GP can look at the whole picture. That means checking for the medical causes that can make weight harder to shift, reviewing any medications that may be contributing, and understanding how weight is affecting other parts of your health such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose and joint pain. It also means the plan you leave with fits your health, not just your goal weight.

What the Program Involves

  • Initial assessment: a longer appointment to go through your health history, current medications, previous attempts and what you want to achieve
  • Baseline testing: blood pressure, weight and waist measurement, plus blood tests collected on site by 4Cyte Pathology to check thyroid function, blood glucose, cholesterol and iron
  • A plan built around you: a plan agreed with your GP covering realistic changes to eating, movement and sleep, and any treatment your doctor considers appropriate for you
  • Regular reviews: scheduled appointments to review how things are going, adjust the plan, and repeat testing where needed
  • Referrals where useful: referral to a dietitian, exercise physiologist or other support where it would help

Who the Program Suits

The program is for adults who want to address their weight with medical support and ongoing review, particularly where weight is affecting other health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea or joint pain. Your GP will talk through whether it is the right approach for you at your first appointment.

Appointments with your GP are bulk billed for eligible Medicare cardholders. Some tests and treatments may carry a fee, and our reception team will explain any cost before you go ahead.
